A 3d Ultrasound-based Tracking System for Prostate Biopsy Distribution Quality Insurance

چکیده
In this chapter we first discuss the clinical context of this work: the anatomy and the function of the prostate are introduced, followed by a brief overview on prostate cancer and prostatic cancer distribution, and also the current standard approaches in diagnosis and therapy. Crucial for the understanding of this work is the discussion on prostate motion and deformation that occur during therapeutic and diagnostical interventions. In the second section, prostate biopsies under 2D transrectal ultrasound, the case study of this work, is presented in detail, followed by a discussion on the insufficiencies of this method. Prostate biopsy tracking and guidance is presented as a solution to these insufficiencies in the following section, where the state of the art in this domain is presented. Finally, we give an overview on the method that we propose in this work to solve the tracking and guidance problem, a 3D ultrasound-based elastic prostate tracking system. te l-0 03 32 73 0, v er si on 1 21 O ct 2 00 8

Towards 3D Ultrasound Image Based Soft Tissue Tracking: A Transrectal Ultrasound Prostate Image Alignment System
The emergence of real-time 3D ultrasound (US) makes it possible to consider image-based tracking of subcutaneous soft tissue targets for computer guided diagnosis and therapy. We propose a 3D transrectal US based tracking system for precise prostate biopsy sample localisation. The aim is to improve sample distribution, to enable targeting of unsampled regions for repeated biopsies, and to make ...
متن کاملProstate biopsy tracking with deformation estimation
Transrectal biopsies under 2D ultrasound (US) control are the current clinical standard for prostate cancer diagnosis. The isoechogenic nature of prostate carcinoma makes it necessary to sample the gland systematically, resulting in a low sensitivity. Also, it is difficult for the clinician to follow the sampling protocol accurately under 2D US control and the exact anatomical location of the b...
متن کاملProstate Biopsy Assistance System with Gland Deformation Estimation for Enhanced Precision
Computer-assisted prostate biopsies became a very active research area during the last years. Prostate tracking makes it possible to overcome several drawbacks of the current standard transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) biopsy procedure, namely the insufficient targeting accuracy which may lead to a biopsy distribution of poor quality, the very approximate knowledge about the actual location of the s...
متن کاملClosed-Loop Control in Fused MR-TRUS Image-Guided Prostate Biopsy
Multi-modality fusion imaging for targeted prostate biopsy is difficult because of prostate motion during the biopsy procedure. A closed-loop control mechanism is proposed to improve the efficacy and safety of the biopsy procedure, which uses real-time ultrasound and spatial tracking as feedback to adjust the registration between a preoperative 3D image (e.g. MRI) and real-time ultrasound image...
متن کاملClinical application of a 3D ultrasound-guided prostate biopsy system.
OBJECTIVES Prostate biopsy (Bx) has for 3 decades been performed in a systematic, but blind fashion using 2D ultrasound (US). Herein is described the initial clinical evaluation of a 3D Bx tracking and targeting device (Artemis; Eigen, Grass Valley, CA). Our main objective was to test accuracy of the new 3D method in men undergoing first and follow-up Bx to rule out prostate cancer (CaP). MAT...
